Another great day in South Georgia

We started our day with a landing at Gold Harbor, which is regarded by many as one of South Georgia's most beautiful sites. The back drop is a hanging glacier and vertical cliffs that rise straight out of the sea. The animal population consists of seabirds, seals, King penguins, Gentoo penguins and elephant seals. While we watched the penguins, the glacier had a couple of avalanches, the ice broke away from the glacier and made a huge rumbling sound, very impressive to watch.

There was another huge King penguin colony, but not as big as the first one we visited. The baby King penguins were very inquisitive and came right up to us, pecking on our shoes, pants and jackets. Two of the babies came very close to me and were flapping their wings at each other and then flapped me with their wings.

No baby seals on this beach, they were all adults or teenagers. The elephant seals were huge and these were not the large males. (the larger males are already out at sea, can't imagine how big they are based on the size we saw today)

Our second landing today was at Cooper Bay. We went out in two groups for a 1.5 hour zodiac tour. As Cheryl and I waited our turn, we watched the Chinstrap penguins swimming about and jumping in the water. A Chinstrap penguin jumped into the zodiac while they were waiting to board passengers. (now how cute is that) Unfortunately we didn't get pictures, but we got to see it.

The 1.5 hour tour was fantastic. We got to see gentoo, chinstrap, king and macaroni penguins... and the very cute baby seals were following along with the zodiac boats playing in the wake.
