Another day at sea & Elephant Island

Our second Bio security check, need to make sure that we don't have anything from South Georgia on our clothes and equipment before we step on the ice. It's impressive how very careful they are with protecting the different environments. Each time we step off/on the ship we need to sanitize our boots.

Spent most of the day in bed watching movies, managed to make it to breakfast, lunch and dinner, but very tired! Cheryl is fine, and I'm not sea sick, just drowsy from the sea sick meds. Over the last two days, I have spent most of it sleeping. Apparently the crew has not been feeling 100% either.

The crew research scientists give lectures a couple times a day, where they discuss what we have seen and what we are about to see. It has been very interesting.

This morning we arrived at Elephant Island, a landing site that you rarely get to go ashore, mostly just a zodiac tour. Our expedition leader has been trying to land at this spot for 10 years and today we are actually going to do it! A very special moment. This is the spot where Shackleton left 22 of his men for four months while he and 5 others went for help. It was a memorable event and everyone is thrilled, we have been extremely lucky with conditions.

We did 1.5 hour zodiac tour today, we got to see the ice calving into the sea, very impressive to see. We also got to see chinstrap penguins jumping into and out of the sea. It was very cute and a great thing to see.

This is the first day that we have seen another tourist ship otherwise we have been completely alone. Today we also got our first glimpse of big icebergs.

The waters are calm again and should remain this way until we cross Drake's passage. (I expect to sleep my way through Drake's passage :) ) When the waters are rough, it is challenging getting in and out of the zodiacs.

So far we estimate the we have seen over 1 million penguins! Happy Days!!

This afternoon we are setting sail for Antarctic Sound!!! We will be waking up at 3:30 am hoping to catch an Antarctic sunrise!

BTW, did I mention the we are going to see more penguins.

  1. Wow, you're getting up at 3am??? That's good to hear, cuz Roxy's routine has kinda shifted. She sleeps til 10am, breakfast, play time, nap time, lunch, nap time, playtime, dinner, then pace the halls til Auntie Cathy goes to bed, somewhere between 2-4 am! LOL!
